Gou Senekal toe saam met Abí/ Quick one to Senekal with Abí

From 20 to 22 March, Abí and I went to visit Grandma and pa in the Free State. It was Abi's first long ride and she was a great pillion. Our route was roughly N1, N12, R59, R57, R707 and small stretch of N5. The route is not bad but has many potholes especially on the R707 near Petrus Steyn, easy with the motorcycle, but will not be a pleasure in a sedan. We drove and stopped at Petroport near Pretoria, Engen 1 Stop near Meyerton and at the Peerlandpadstal on the other side of Petrus Steyn. We also enjoyed the weekend with Grandma and pa and took he same route back. It was also my first long ride with the BMW R1250 GSA HP, what a comfortable bike. The technology is excellent and she has the WOEMA when needed.

Familie TOG! Family TRIP! - 12-13 Okt/Oct 2019
Dis duidelik droog. My bles sê les op. |
If you on short notice decide to take your daughter on an overnight nature motorcycle adventure, things happen fast.
The year are speeding on and Dürandt and Abí already had a motorcycle tour, only Niah did not and time is short. So I decided to take Niah last weekend on a short overnight tour to the Mafefe area (Wolkberge). Meanwhile I (WhatsApp) tell Kobus that we are going and that he is welcome to come along, and I accidentally remembered to tell Tanya we're going. Kobus agrees to join us later the Saturday and Tanya informs me of my loss of focus, as we were suppose to pick up four active beehives on Saturday evening in Tzaneen area. Tanya and I, think quickly and decide that we can go camping and that they will join us at camp on Sunday, socialise and "braai" and from there we go and pick up the beehives. The plan was set. Niah wakes up on Saturday morning (05:40) with her father demanding that she must pack because we are going on a motorcycle tour. She looked at the watch and stared at me as if I lost my mind, but without asking much more, just here and there a question like "are we going to swim", she willingly packed. Not long after we were packed; 3 hard GS panniers packed and with Niah and I on Ghülandt we left, bought supplies in Potties (Mokopane) and took the few planned miles slowly and safely. Our first stop is Nkumidamme, it has little water. we took some photos and realised that the day is going to get warm, it was already 26 degrees. From here we continue, through Lebowakgomo as the speedcops is very active. Not long after, we turned left onto the Mafefe road and then at the turnoff to "Kamp1" as the camp is known on my GPS. From here (and it's so wonderful) there is NO cellphone signal! It feels like the good old '80s no one can get hold of you except by visiting you. The road is rough and we are heavy, the GS's front wheel wants to leave mother earth and Niah decided to disembark a number of times, rather than staying, on the uphills and water-crossings. It's clearly dry. Soon we were at the old famous "Kamp1". Niah could not wait to take a swimming. I give her the freedom and we went swimming together. The water was not warm, rather freezing cold, but refreshing. I left her there and start setting up the camp, later she helped pitching the tent and we gathered wood together, for a nice campfire. Not long after, Kobus arrived and he pitches his tent and from there we sat by the (unlit) fire and talk. It's quiet and calm, only birds and the noice of the water could be heard. Later we lit the fire and continue talking, Niah became hungry and we made cheese sandwiches, ate biltong and NikNaks and later Doritos, probably not very healthy but tasty. We made coffee several times and by 9pm Niah fell asleep next to the fire in the gravel and dust. I later woke her and send her to bed. One more coffee and off to bed. Sunday morning I got up early and got the fire going as we were going to drive out to the main road and meet Tanya on their way and "braai" on signal hill. There was no need to rush, but purposefully going ahead with breakfast and breaking camp. Kobus as usual is finished first, as is finished with something it gets stored away. Niah jumps into the ice-cold river and swims (baths) and the older fellows stay away, but at least brushed their teeth and where otherwise required. Breakfast is toasted sandwiches with cheese, Doritos and biltong. Then the final packing and departure began. The return ride is the same as coming, if Niah wants to get off I let her, the terrain is difficult and I am happy to lose some weight before it was getting too technical. Tanya joined us at Hwelesaneng and we drove up the steep hill, on a beautiful cement road to the top of the hill. Here we made a fire while the children explored the old buildings followed up with a "braai". The sun is warm but it's satisfying. As it is high above sea level, there are not many trees, but a constant cool breeze was blowing. My bald head paid the price. The afternoon passed quickly and then it was time to start the journy back, Kobus to his home and us on to fetch the beehives. At 22:00 we are at home. Kids tired, parents tired, and the bees placed with only one sting! We all slept like loggs! Thank you for what we have, family, nature, the privilege of riding a motorcycle, the safe ride, and Your Holy hand of protection. Thank you Tanya, Niah, Dürandt, Abí and my best friend Kobus, another one for the archives, another story to tell my grandchildren. |
Liam's Journey - 9-10 Feb 2019
Liam is a very special boy with special needs. The StofKat group, together with other businesses and individuals, decided to arrange a trip from Bela-Bela via Vaalwater and Melkrivier to Nylstroom, to benefit his medical expenses and, of course, creating a dust event.
It was a privilege to spend the two days with fellow adventure motorcyclists and venture into the "yellow" trail with SAND. Limpopo is a beautiful province that has great potential for tourism. We started in Bela-Bela and took the gravel via Bakkerpas to Vaalwater. Unfortunately, the sand monster caught one of our friends forcing him to buy a piece of mother earth and in the action broke his leg in two places!! He was immediately transported to the nearest hospital with the excellent backup vehicle! Well done! Suddenly, everyone took the sand more seriously and treated it with respect and not long after we arrived at the sausage roll and water point on Bakkerspas. The road had everything, stones, ditches, sand and even good gravel, everything an adventurer looks for. Ps Maybe not the sand, but sand remains a challenge and victory if you get through it in one piece. On Saturday night we sleep over at Lekhalo Safaris, what a wonderful place. Tents were pitched and the swimming pool was a wonderful treat after the hot day. The food was incredibly well prepared and the company was even better. Thanks Lekhalo! The next morning we had breakfast, just as god as dinner, and not long afterwards we were on our way again. Kobus and I were second and third from behind and it was then that the pig (no not Kobus!) decided to run in front of Kobus on a nice straight road, he missed the pig like a daredevil but then met the ground. Ribs hurting and with torn ligaments, he continued on the road, salute! Ps. "Ou Ryperd" (R1200 GS) just got up and went on, new marks with new stories to tell. Not much further, we, Kobus and I decided to take a short cut home so that he could start recovering from the fall and just after 12:00 the afternoon I stopped at home, brown from the dust, but satisfied! The rest of team also made it home with Cobus braking his collarbone (and still rode home). Thank you to the organizers for everything and the opportunity to get to know you. Liam we pray for you and know with Jesus that she will be healed, DV. |
Die roete/ The route (Kobus/Jacques)

Ons roete was rofweg, Mokopane, Senekal, Beaufort Wes, Langebaan, Kaapstad (net ek), Robertson, Groot Brak, Baviaanskloof, Grahamstad, Ugie, Sanipas, Senekal, Meyerton, Mokopane... 5000km. Cape trip with my daugher... 2018Since I had to go to Cape Town for my studies, I got the vision to do it with my daughter, as it was her turn! The idea evolved and grown into a workable plan, and it even had Kobus coming along. Six days off leave, buying 17 days away, passing through seven of our provinces plus a piece of Lesotho. Niah was scary at he the though because 4600km on a motorcycle was not the ideal pre-teen outing. She was excited to see her grandmothers and -fathers and great grandmother. At least her father also made sure she could listen to audio books on the go (a blessing on its own). Our route was roughly Mokopane, Senekal, Beaufort West, Langebaan, Cape Town (only me), Robertson, Great Brak, Baviaanskloof, Grahamstown, Ugie, Sani pass, Senekal, Meyerton, Mokopane ... 5000km. We planned that Kobus will join us in Baviaans. There is so much to tell that I do not really know what to share and what to leave... I would say the highlights were as follows: A quick visit to Merweville and the reunion with my niece (20+ years later), Malgas pont, Witsand, stay over with Andrè and Elise in Great Brak (for Niah the highlight the Pinball machine), the meeting with Kobus and staying over in Makedaat Caves and the ride through the Baviaanskloof, sleeping at Smokey Moon Backpackers (weird but wonderful), the gravel road to Peet in the Ugie area, the mud-riding on my birthday (very definitely), Sani pass, my sister's daughter, Juanique's wedding... and of course the safe return home with zero bad incidents. Finally, building relationships and specifically the one with my daughter Niah. How she survived me will she will know. It's not always been easy with full panniers and pillion. Thank you Niah for everything. Daddy enjoyed it so much and you were a star all 4600km. You've kept with it even in places where strong men would have refused to go... Thank you for the confidence you have shown in me. I know the time together will always be a super special memory... I hope and pray that you will always keep Jesus in your heart as you have shown by your actions on the not always so "nice" ride. Sometimes it was cold -2 degrees Celsius, the road wet, muddy and some places so steep that I do not know how we have made it ... It the first time I had to catch a motorcycle almost blown over by the wind to the left while on the stand... thanks. Kobus what would I have done without you, no normal person can pick up a GSA alone in mud ... Thank you for your patience with my inability. For the camaraderie and wisdom sometimes to just keep quiet. Hope we can ride a lot of kms together. To my wife and other kids thank you for the opportunity to leave you for almost 3 weeks... Die Roete/ The Route
MOSDES 2017
Jacques Malan |
Riding to Mozambique with my son...Dürandt (my nine-year-old son) and I, planned to travel with my BMW R1200GSA to my friend Kobus's Abenḉoado Lodge in Mozambique. We for more than a month prayed together every morning so that Dürandt can decide for himself whether he wants and is able to tackle the 2523km. After he decided he will go along, we could not wait for our Dad and Son adventure trip to start... and because of this we were packed almost a week before its start. Little did we know that Jesus had a plan with us and turned it into a journey with God, Father and Son ... We decided that Jesus should travel with us and to prepare scanned Dürandt's daily scripture book and store it on my phone so that we, cellular signal or not, could do our daily Bible study. We kept to our commitment and is still doing it.
Here are some pictures of our ride ... Jacques Malan |
